THE QUEST FOR A FINAL MEMORIAL SPACE
We were able to save the artifacts on the exterior of our beloved Luther High School South before the building was demolished. We formed a committee group called the LHSS Artifact Committee in Facebook. The goal was to decide how to pay respect to our alma mater and preserve these artifacts in perpituity.
THE TIME CAPSULES

LUTHER HIGH SCHOOL SOUTH
Lutheran secondary education in Chicago began with the founding of Luther Institute in 1909 by the Concordia Mutual Benefit League. In 1913 Luther Institute Association took over the management and control of the school. In 1945 the Lutheran High School Association of Greater Chicago was organized for the purpose of building additional Lutheran high schools in the Chicago area. Luther High School South is the first regional school of the Association and opened its doors for the first time the boys and girls of the South Side in the Fall of 1951 with 150 students in attendance.
On March 26, 1954, Luther High School South was formally accepted into the membership in North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, the highest regional accrediting agency. LHSS thrived for decades. In 2009, the school was named Luther South Math, Science, and Performing Arts High School. In 2014, the school was permanently closed.
